-- home news calendar village facilities allotments the fisherman’s rest open spaces pre-school @ the hive primary school st andrews church village hall village shop village swimming pool clubs & groups cricket club monday club kingsbridge jazz club parish project group sports & leisure taverners wi out & about footpaths river south efford marsh wildlife local info flooding local transport magpie newsletter signup parish council parish council downloads useful info useful links useful numbers weather, tides & surf gallery around the parish butterflies events flooding in the parish flowers river the village wildlife neighbourhood plan home map progress surveys and consultations further information contact & your feedback your link to our community welcome to aveton gifford's community website t he parish of aveton gifford lies in the south hams area of south devon, with the population spread between the village and outlying hamlets and farms. the village is situated about 3 miles inland from the coast at the head of the tidal avon estuary, in an area of outstanding natural beauty ( south devon aonb ). the parish has a pleasing combination of the old and the new. the manor of avetone was mentioned in the domesday book and there are many indications of its ancient and historical past. in the village a 15th century bridge crosses the avon, and the 13th century st andrew’s church , which was badly damaged during ww2, has been extensively rebuilt. the churchyard at st andrew’s is of interest to family historians, and a list of burials can be found inside the church. further aspects of the history and heritage of our parish can be found on our parish project website the village today is the heart of a vibrant community, and has the benefit of a thriving primary school , a pre-school and toddler group at the hive , a community shop and post office , and a pub the fisherman’s rest . there are community allotments, a village hall, the village green with a playing field and children’s play areas, and a tennis court, and south efford marsh is a managed wildlife reserve on the banks of the river. in 2015 the parish council took over the swimming pool at the school on a long lease, and this is now run as a community pool. there are a number of clubs and groups for all ages and interests including cricket and tennis, table tennis sessions for all ages, amateur dramatics, allotment holders, local history, the wi, and for older residents, the monday club. football and tennis coaching sessions have proved popular. entertainments and events in the village include the annual bonfire and fireworks display in november, a very popular annual classic car show on august bank holiday monday, a social evening of carols and entertainment in december to celebrate the switching on of the christmas tree lights, and the church fete is held each july. there are also pantomimes and revues, murder mystery evenings, and musical entertainments of all varieties and for all ages. the fisherman’s rest hosts popular monthly jazz evenings with a wide range of both local and visiting musicians, and regular quiz evenings. the village hall hosts community events including the annual harvest supper, a flower and produce show, various classes including zumba, yoga, visiting entertainers and speakers, and film shows using the newly installed multimedia equipment. in recent years a local group, the south hams film collective, has organised an amateur film maker’s competition, and then hosted an evening – the annual ag fim fest – in the hall to pick the winners. the area is popular for walkers enjoying the 14 miles of parish footpaths through unspoilt countryside and the tidal estuary, and also attracts bird watchers, photographers and artists. kayakers and sup enthusiasts enjoy the river, and limited moorings are available by arrangement and annual licence. the nearest beaches at bantham and bigbury are at the mouth of the river, both well known for surfing and water sports. there are two community magazines. the magpie is a bi-monthly magazine, delivered to all households in the parish by a team of volunteers, and containing information and articles contributed by a wide range of residents. the magnet is the church magazine, brought out monthly and containing illustrated articles on a broad variety of topics. aveton gifford has a weekly contribution to the kingsbridge gazette’s village voice written by rosie warrilow. there are several notice boards around the village; aveton gifford neighbourhood plan the parish council has been advised to draw up a neighbourhood plan in order for the parish to have a say in how it views future development here. a neighbourhood plan working group of residents has now been set up, and all sections of the community here are asked for their thoughts and wishes for our own parish in the years to come – it is essential that the plan that is drawn up gets your input and reflects your opinions . you can follow the progress on our new neighbourhood plan web pages on this site, and add your own comments and feedback for the various surveys as the process goes ahead. the aveton gifford draft neighbourhood plan is open for public consultation now. copies are available to view in the shop, fisherman’s rest, village hall, and the church. they are also available to download from our own website on the surveys and consultation page- has now been drawn up, and is to be submitted for informal comment from parishioners and the planning department. there is a six week consultation period (18th may until 29th june) prior to completing the final plan for submission. all parishioners are invited to please look at the draft now, and pass any comments you have on to sarah harcus or david davis berry, or use the comments box at the bottom of each page on this website . it is vitally important to get your views now, and for you to take a part in these last few stages. this plan will help to protect our parish and influence planning decisions here for the next 15 years, so please help us to finalise our own neighbourhood plan, otherwise we will have to rely on the local plans of south hams district council. aveton gifford film fest 2018 – the annual film fest was held again in may in the hall to a packed house. the 15 films were all good, but there did have to be a winner, and again this year the top vote went to wat kirby. thanks to surf hams film collective for another excellent evening of local talent, and some of the the entries from both this and last year’s shows can be downloaded here; it has become a popular annual event, held each year on august bank holiday monday, attracting car enthusiasts and visitors alike from far and wide. the 10th show will be held on bank holiday monday. the car show in 2018 – a new team of organisers has taken over, and the show will continue as before! thanks to all those who have come forward to put this years’s show on again – it will again be held on august bank holiday monday, and will follow exactly the same format as before. entries have already been taken from january onwards, and now all we need is the good we
